What to Look for in a Ceiling Fan

Fan Size
The top factor that’s going to determine whether or not a ceiling fan will work for your space? Size. There’s no way around it. You just can’t add a ceiling fan to your bedroom that’s going to be too wide or too long. Likewise, you can’t put a small fan in a large room and expect it to do very much.
As you shop, look at your chosen ceiling fan’s blade diameter (sometimes also called the blade sweep or blade span), as well as the down rod length. This will tell you how much space your chosen fan needs to turn in your room without hitting furniture or walls, as well as how much headspace you’ll have beneath your ceiling fan after it’s installed.
Do note that the greater the fan’s blade diameter, the more powerful the airflow. Do note, though, that if a fan reports a high airflow measurement (usually 6,000 cubic feet per minute or higher), the airflow measurement was taken at the fan’s highest setting. If the fan has a lower setting, that may be more comfortable for daily use.
