There are a few overall layouts that distinguish one porch from another. For example, in the Eastern United States, front porches tend to be smaller and used as mainly a transitional space from the outdoors to indoors; while in the South and the Southwestern United States, front porches are larger and used as an entertaining area.

3 Main Types of Porches

1. Rain Porch

One of the three best-known styles is the “rain porch.” A rain porch is very similar to other kinds of porches, with the exception that the roof extends much farther beyond the edge of the deck.

The extra portion of the roof is typically supported by columns or other supports. A rain porch both protects the decking from the weather and keeps it shaded throughout the day.

2. Sleeping Porch

Another type is the “sleeping porch,” which dates back to about a hundred years ago. A sleeping porch is a (usually) screened in porch furnished for sleeping during the warmer months.

The idea comes from before air-conditioning, where sleeping outside in the cool night air was more comfortable than in the stuffy home.

3. Veranda

A third type is a “veranda,” which is a roofed open gallery that may be partially enclosed by a railing. A veranda typically extends around both sides of the home in addition to across the front. The above picture is a grand veranda with white columns. The facade of the home is in deep red brick.

Large or small, a front porch is a multi-functional space that can be adapted to your personal style and needs. It can serve as a mudroom, to help keep the interior of your home clean, or it can serve as an additional living space, like a sitting room or even an outdoor kitchen.

We hope you enjoy this varied, expansive curated collection of front porches!
